NEWPORT NEWS– NFL quarterback Michael Vick was in Newport News Monday giving back to kids in his hometown.

The Eagles’ football player spent some time with kids at Psalm Ministries subbing for Saint Nick.

This time of the year, Vick says he loves coming home. “This is home for me, this will always be home. I appreciate the love and support I get everyday when I’ m out in the community. It’s something I feel like I have to do.

The kids get gifts and a chance to meet the homegrown football star.

Jahmya Hammond received Hello Kitty headphones. “After I told him thank you he said your welcome,” she giggled.

There were lots of thankful children and their parents were thankful to Michael Vick for remembering his hometown.

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation broke ground on the football field in North Philadelphia’s 87-acre Hunting Park thanks to a critical contribution from Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Michael Vick and his newly formed charity, the Team Vick Foundation. The $200,000 contribution marks the launch of the Foundation and its first major gift. The field will be named the Team Vick Field.

The $1 million restoration of Hunting Park’s football field is the capstone project of Phase One of the Hunting Park Revitalization Project, a long-term comprehensive plan led by the Fairmount Park Conservancy to transform the park into a safe and well-maintained space that will provide a place for healthy recreation for children and families, bring neighborhoods together and serve as a catalyst for larger neighborhood renewal. Construction of football field the will be completed by late spring 2013. The football field restoration is also being funded by the City of Philadelphia; Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; JAWS Youth Playbook; LISC Philadelphia; The Philly Area Chevy Dealers’ EcoAd through CBS EcoMedia; and The Philadelphia Eagles.

The Hunting Park Football field is home to the North Philly Aztecs youth football program,the first inner city youth football team to win a Pop Warner Championship. With more than 400 athletes in its football and cheerleading programs, the Aztecs are one of the largest youth athletic programs in Philadelphia. Yet, due to its deteriorating condition, the Aztecs have not played a game on their home field in nearly 20 years.

Improvements to the football field include: drainage by elevating the field, new under-field drainage system, re-grading and resurfacing field and play areas, field lighting, installing goal posts and new scoreboard, leveling and paving of new track

Vick founded the Team Vick Foundation, a non-profit, 501c3 charity to provide second chances and support to individuals and communities who need it most in the summer of 2012. Committed to improving lives and communities, Vick’s vision and leadership is focused on improving livelihoods and communities through public service. This vision led Vick to become involved in the Hunting Park Revitalization Project.

Eagles QB Michael Vick Donates $200,000 For New Football Field

Fresh off a big Eagles home victory on Sunday, Michael Vick waded into a huge crowd in Hunting Park ready to make another big handoff for kids in the form of a new football field.

“This field will give kids a second chance, another opportunity to come out and play football and dream the dream,” Vick said.

There were lots of cheers as Vick joined a cast of big names with a $200,000 check to build a new football field here. No one could be happier than the players for the North Philly Aztecs who haven’t had a home game here in 19-years.

“I think it will help the players play better,” said one Aztec player.

“It’s good he’s giving back to our community,” another player said.

“You see the field we practice on now, it’s kinda bad so it’s good to have a new one coming,” said Aztec Coach Jay “Buck” Ward.

This is part of a $4 million renovation at the 87-acre park. Last spring, the Phillies’ Ryan Howard helped build a new baseball complex here. It came complete with lights, dugouts and bleachers. It’s a big turn around for the park and the kids who love to use it.

“The only thing we can leave is a legacy,” said former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski. “And the legacy is to help some of these young kids improve their lot in life.”

“It’s great for the kids in the community, keeps them out of trouble. Keeps them here in the organization,” said Capt. Frank Vanore of the Philadelphia Police Department’s 25th District.

Vick is no stranger to second chances. He sees this as a rebirth for the park and an opportunity for the football stars of the future. He promised to return for the first home game next season

“Definitely going be at the first home opener,” Vick promised. “It’s only right. I gotta be here cheering the Aztecs on and whoever’s out there playing I’ll be out there to support.”

Construction is expected to get underway soon. It should be completed for the start of the Aztecs’ 2013 football season. They will finally get to host a home game after nearly two decades of playing games on the road.
